Education Rights Counsel is proud to announce that CEO Lauren Micek Vargas has been honored with the Dick Holland Literacy Advocate Award, presented by Phoenix Academy in Omaha.

The Dick Holland Literacy Advocate Award honors work that creates and increases awareness, resources, and dedication to advancing literacy and education. It recognizes efforts to strengthen the knowledge of educational institutions, provide meaningful professional development, support essential research, and build broader societal commitment to improving academic achievement for children.

"Advancing literacy takes everyone: families, educators, schools, and advocates all working toward the same goal. ERC is proud to be part of that effort in Nebraska, and I'm grateful to Phoenix Academy for shining a light on this work and the people behind it. In this community, when we commit to one another, we all rise together," said Lauren.

Lauren's recognition reflects the principles that guide ERC's work every day: bringing real-world experience and clarity to students and families who need a trusted, reliable advocate to access the education they deserve. Lauren helps families understand and enforce their children's right to learn while working alongside educators, partners, and policymakers to strengthen the systems that serve students.

Her advocacy operates at both the individual and systemic level. She supports students and families facing immediate challenges, and the insights drawn from those cases inform the training, policy guidance, and reform efforts that extend her impact far beyond any single case.. The connection between individual advocacy and systemic change is central to how ERC pursues its mission of protecting the right to learn for every child.

ERC extends its congratulations to Lauren on this well-deserved recognition, and its thanks to Phoenix Academy for honoring leaders who are working to ensure that all children can stay in school and thrive.
