Real Impact: Sent Out Again
The impact of educational advocacy is often measured in IEPs, service plans, supports, and outcomes. But its true meaning is often found in the personal stories behind those milestones.
Recently, one of the families we work with shared a poem created by their son, William, reflecting on his experience at school. Through his words, he expressed both the challenges he faced and the growth he has experienced along the way. No child should have to navigate school feeling unseen, and no family should have to navigate the system alone. William's family trusted us to walk alongside them, and that trust is something we hold carefully.
We are honored to have been part of William's story. His work is a reminder that behind every child we help is a young person finding their voice, building confidence, and discovering that school can be a place where they belong.
Sent Out Again
by William
They say they’re helping, but I’m sent away,
Smiles on their faces, cuz they say I can’t stay.
They talk about “plans” and “steps to take,
But they make my world feels like it might break.
The classroom’s too loud, the lights too bright,
I wish someone would help make it right.
I flap when I’m nervous, I hide when it’s loud,
They whisper my name and say I’m not allowed.
I ask for a break, just a moment to breathe,
But they shake their heads—they don’t believe.
Breaks aren't a weakness, they help me grow,
But teachers don’t understand the strength I know
They call me “wild” or “hard to teach,”
But I’m a kid with dreams just in reach.
I need some care, a place to belong,
Not punishment for what’s not wrong.
I want to learn, but they close the door,
Say “maybe next time,” like before.
I ask so softly, “Was I bad?”
And it makes my heart feel really sad.
The truth is this: I’m not the mistake,
I’m strong enough for the world to shake.
One day they’ll see the fire I hide,
The strength that grows deep inside.
I’ll show them all the things I can do,
The spark they missed, the me they never knew.
I’m not broken, not wrong, not less,
I’m a masterpiece, even if they can't see
just give me a chance is what I plea
And when the world feels too heavy to bear,
Mom takes my hand—she’s always there.
But Mom’s not alone—she’s got a team,
ERC stands strong to fight for my dream.
They know the law, they know what’s right,
They’ll help me learn, they’ll help me fight.
ERC and mom will let them know
Understanding is the seed we sow.
Together they’ll make sure the school sees
That learning belongs to kids like me.
I’m not a problem, I’m not a flaw,
I’m a child worth love, respect, and awe.
