Nebraska's youngest students need your support NOW.
LB1053 has been introduced in the Nebraska Legislature at the request of the Governor to take away our youngest children's right to stay in school. It is critical to the health and wellbeing of our children that we OPPOSE this bill.
Suspending and expelling PK-2 students does not help children or teachers.
By suspending or expelling instead of providing support to a child who is second grade or younger, we delay identification of larger problems, like:
- abuse,
- developmental disabilities,
- trauma,
- and special needs.
Suspending or expelling children PK-2 creates significant delays in a child's education that can take years to undo while allowing the underlying problem that caused the behavior to persist.
Instead of eliminating children's rights, we should give our educators the support they need.
Identifying underlying issues and providing instruction is what eliminates disruptive behaviors and allows all children to stay in school and thrive.
Please, call your State Senator NOW and urge them to vote NO on LB1053.

Voices for Children in Nebraska, Education Rights Counsel, and ACLU of Nebraska stand together in strong opposition to the use of electrified gloves on children in schools and to School Resource Officers carrying these devices in school buildings. There will be an opportunity to share thoughts during time for public comment at the Omaha Public Schools board meeting on Monday, August 17, at 6 p.m. Families in other Omaha-area school districts should also reach out to their school boards to ask about their districts’ policies on use of force and memoranda of understanding with the Omaha Police Department.
