Grant to fund Education Rights Training for Parents and Professionals

Education Rights Counsel (ERC) is pleased to announce it was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the Karnett Trust through United Way of the Midlands’ (UWM) Community Impact Fund. Thanks to the generosity of UWM donors, parents of children with disabilities and the professionals who work with them will be trained to advocate for and secure the education services to which students are entitled under federal and state law.

This funding was awarded by a dedicated group of community volunteers who meticulously reviewed applications and highlighted ERC’s vital role in fostering a thriving community. The community volunteers’ commitment underscores the collective effort of UWM to address pressing local needs, ensuring that funding will directly contribute to meaningful, positive change.

ERC’s training for parents and professionals deepens participants’ knowledge by providing a comprehensive understanding of special education rights, services and legal frameworks. It empowers advocates by providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to access appropriate supports and services. It also bolsters school compliance with federal and state law while fostering collaboration between families and schools to secure the best outcomes for children with disabilities.

Students like Lani exemplify the impact of this funding. Lani was 6 years old when she was placed with her then-foster mom, Amy, who hoped to adopt Lani. However, the adoption proceeding nearly stalled because Lani was struggling in school. With ERC’s training and support, Amy successfully advocated for the education services Lani needed to thrive. Today, Lani’s adoption is final, and she loves going to school.

“Education Rights Counsel greatly appreciates the support of the Karnett Trust and United Way of the Midlands. Through this grant more Nebraska families will be empowered to advocate for their children’s education,” said Lauren Micek Vargas, CEO of Education Rights Counsel. “We are very grateful to everyone who contributed.”
